ATV ride, Ayung river rafting and the Bali swing

Three scenes side by side — a rider on a red quad bike splashing past a waterfall, a woman on a giant swing in a pink dress over rice terraces, and a family in a yellow raft on a river rapid

An adventure day in the hills above Ubud: a quad bike through jungle and under a waterfall, white-water rafting on the Ayung, and the swing over the rice terraces at Alas Harum.

The places you visit

In the order we visit them, each with its photo and what happens there.

ATV quad bike through the jungle

The day starts on a quad bike. After a briefing and a practice lap you follow a guide along a track through the forest north of Ubud: dirt road, then a tunnel cut through the rock, then river crossings and a stretch of mud that is the part everyone remembers. The route passes under a waterfall, which is where the photographs are taken. Children can ride as passengers behind a parent or a guide, and helmets, boots and a change of clothes are provided — you will need the change of clothes.

  2. A family in blue life jackets and red helmets in a yellow raft dropping over a white-water rapid, one of them with arms raised
    Stop 2

White-water rafting on the Ayung river

The Ayung is Bali's longest river, and the stretch below Ubud runs for about ten kilometres through a gorge of rainforest and carved cliff walls. The rapids are class two and three: enough to splash and shout over, not enough to frighten anyone. Each raft carries a guide who steers from the back and tells you when to paddle, and there are calm stretches between the rapids to look up at the gorge. Life jackets and helmets are provided, and the trip ends with a hot shower and lunch above the river.

  3. A woman in a long pink dress on a rope swing above green rice terraces and palm trees, with the Alas Harum sign on the hillside
    Stop 3

The Bali swing at Alas Harum

Alas Harum is a park on the side of the Tegallalang valley, with its rice terraces below and the jungle opposite. Its giant swings hang from tall poles at the edge of the slope, so that you swing out over the terraces with nothing under you but green. There are several swings at different heights, a bird's-nest platform, and a terrace for coffee and a view. It is where the famous flowing-dress photograph of Bali is taken — the dresses are there to borrow, and the staff know exactly where to stand.
