Stop 1Lempuyang Temple and the Gate of Heaven
Pura Lempuyang is one of the oldest and most important temples on Bali, on the slopes of a mountain in the far east of the island. Its split gate — two tall carved stone halves with the sky between them — frames Mount Agung exactly, and on a clear morning the volcano stands in the opening like a picture. This is the photograph that made the temple famous, and a queue forms for it; the guide gets you there early. A sarong is required and is lent at the entrance, and the temple asks visitors to dress modestly and keep to the paths.
Stop 2Ulun Danu Bratan temple on the lake
From Lempuyang the road climbs into the mountains of Bedugul, where the air is cool and the hillsides are strawberry farms and vegetable gardens. Ulun Danu Bratan is the temple on Lake Beratan, its tiered shrines built on small islands so that when the lake is high they stand in the water with the mountain behind them — it is the picture on the 50,000 rupiah note. The gardens along the shore are a good place to walk after the drive, and the lake has boats for hire. On the way back the road passes the viewpoint over the twin lakes of Buyan and Tamblingan.
