Ubud by classic VW — rice fields, Tegenungan waterfall and a jungle pool

Three scenes side by side — a waterfall below a hillside restaurant, open-top Volkswagen cars driving through bright green rice fields, and tiered turquoise pools under a tall pavilion in the jungle

A day around Ubud in an open-top classic Volkswagen: through the rice fields, down to Tegenungan waterfall, and an afternoon at a pool club above the jungle.

The places you visit

In the order we visit them, each with its photo and what happens there.

  1. A family waving from a green open-top Volkswagen Safari on a narrow lane through bright green rice fields, with a red one ahead
    Stop 1

Classic VW safari through the rice fields

The car is an old open-top Volkswagen Safari, repainted in a bright colour, with a driver at the wheel and the family in the back. It goes slowly, which is the point: along the narrow lanes between the rice fields around Ubud, past farmers in the paddies, temples at the roadside and the villages where the woodcarvers work. You stop wherever you like for a photograph. It is the most relaxed way to see the countryside that surrounds the town, and children love riding in it.

  2. A wide waterfall pouring over dark rock into a brown pool, with a terrace of cafés and umbrellas on the green cliff above it
    Stop 2

    Tegenungan waterfall

Tegenungan is the closest big waterfall to Ubud, a single wide curtain of water dropping about twenty-five metres into a pool between rock walls. Steps lead down from the road to the bottom, where you can stand close enough to feel the spray, and there are terraces and cafés on the cliff above with a view straight down the fall. The water is strongest in the rainy months and a gentle swim in the dry season; the guide will tell you on the day whether the pool is safe to go in.

  3. Curved turquoise pools stepped down a jungle hillside, with swimmers and sun umbrellas, seen from above
    Stop 3

A pool club above the jungle

The afternoon is for the pools: a club built in tiers down the side of a valley, with several pools at different levels, daybeds, and a restaurant in a tall pavilion above it all. Each pool has an edge that looks out over the treetops, so you swim with the jungle in front of you. Families can take a daybed and stay as long as they like; there is food, fresh juice and a shaded area for the children. It is the quiet end to an active day.
