The places you visit
In the order we visit them, each with its photo and what happens there.
Stop 1Parasailing over Tanjung Benoa
Tanjung Benoa is the water-sports beach of Bali, a long spit of sand on the south-east coast with calm, shallow water inside the reef. The parasail takes you up from the beach on a line behind a speedboat, and for a few minutes you hang under the canopy with the whole bay laid out below — the beach, the boats and the hotels of Nusa Dua along the shore. It is gentler than it looks: you take off and land on your feet, and an operator is on the beach the whole time. Children fly with an adult.
Stop 2Jet ski, banana boat and the flying fish
Back on the water, the rides come one after the other. The jet ski is ridden with an instructor sitting behind you on a course inside the bay; the banana boat and the flying fish are towed behind a speedboat, and the flying fish is the one that actually leaves the water. Each ride lasts about fifteen minutes, life jackets are worn for all of them, and the family can choose how many to do. There are showers and changing rooms on the beach.
Stop 3Balinese massage in the afternoon
After the sea, an hour in a spa. The Balinese massage is a long, slow treatment with oil, pressure along the muscles and gentle stretching, done in an open-sided pavilion among the gardens. It is what the island is known for, and after a morning of sun and salt water it is what most people want. The spa has separate rooms and female therapists for the women of the family, and a menu of shorter treatments for anyone who wants less than the full hour.
Stop 4Seafood dinner on the beach at Jimbaran
Jimbaran Bay is a fishing village where the restaurants set their tables on the sand each evening. You choose your fish, prawns, lobster or squid from the day's catch, it is grilled over coconut husks, and it comes to the table with rice, vegetables and sambal while the sun goes down over the bay and the fishing boats come in. The tables are lit with candles after dark, and the food is halal — there is nothing on the grill but the catch.
